The older I get, the more I understand that shame and guilt have no place in my life. Humans aren’t built or destined to house such things. Shame and guilt are not only unnecessary but detrimental to our minds, hearts, homes, and relationships.

From my own personal experience of walking the earth, and from observing and walking alongside others for so many years, it’s become clear that shame and guilt are tricky tactics used by the enemy to covertly confuse our views of ourselves, so that we don’t function at full capacity for God, for good. Walking around in shame and guilt can sometimes look and feel like. piety, like humbleness, but doing so puts us in stark contrast to the way God actually sees us.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12

The east and west run in different directions, and they never, ever meet. This signifies complete removal of our transgressions. We are to live free from past shortcomings, so that we can walk in newness of life.

As we step into a new year, let’s show shame and guilt the door. They are no longer welcome to take up residence in our hearts and minds anymore. When faced with our own sin, we can feel conviction, acknowledge behaviors and tendencies, be led to the root by the Holy Spirit, experience healing, and move on into freedom, without shame and guilt in tow.

Jesus on the cross was our ultimate remedy for condemnation. He came to set us free. May we really walk and live in the truth of that this year!

Read Psalm 103.
